Rule #2: Traveling on the Cheap

Rule #2: Determine where you want to go, then figure out how to get there.

Miles are not equal. Depending on alliances, promotions, and differing programs, certain miles are best suited for certain types of travel.

Let’s look at three examples using United Airlines and American Airlines. (note: for all of these flights, there are other options available too.)

First, what if you wanted to take a trip from the US to Europe? Here’s what the programs would charge:

United:

United-US-to-Europe

American Airlines:

AA-US-to-Europe

Assuming you can go on an off-peak flight and you had the same amount of miles in both programs, you can use 10,000 fewer miles going to Europe through American Airlines. Snazzy, right?

Ok, now let’s say you want to fly from Seattle to NYC:

United:

 United-SEA-to-NYC

American Airlines:

AA-US-to-US

Simple enough. Your tickets will require the same amount of miles in either program.

However, what if you were taking a domestic flight that was less 700 miles in the US? Say, Portland to San Francisco?

United:

United-US-to-US

American Airlines:

AA-US-to-US

In this instance, United wins by 2,500 miles. They have a special program for shorter domestic flights.

Now, I know it’s not always possible to know exactly when or where you are going. However, the earlier you can figure that out, the easier it will be to understand what program is best for you.

At the same time, I think this shows the benefit of having lots of different types of miles. I treat my miles programs like owning a small arsenal. When I’m ready for a trip, I find the best deal possible with what I have available.

Rule #2: Determine where you want to go, then figure out how to get there.

I’m currently charting out the best programs for certain miles. It’s a heavy reason you want to subscribe.

Rough (But becoming clearer) travel path. Starting the evening of October 11th.

Wichita –> Sweden (Stockholm) using: American Airlines?
(18th Morning) Sweden –> Berlin using: American Airlines?
(23rd or 24th morning) Frankfurt –> ? (Spain maybe?) using: American Airlines?
Unknown –> Wichita using: American Airlines?

I need help. I’m also wondering what programs would be useful in the case that one were driving from Berlin to Prague and then from Prague to Frankfurt (The Castle Road). If there are any programs that would apply to hotel stays, car rentals, etc. as well as airline miles that would be of great interest to me. Would you mind considering addressing that thought in one of your future posts?
